Syrian FM Source Condemns Sabotage In Lhasa

The Syrian news agency SANA reports that an official Syrian Foreign Ministry source has said that Syria is following with great concern the recent acts of sabotage committed by a few rioters in Lhasa, Tibet, in which several died and great damage was caused to private and public property.
The source added that Syria sees these destructive acts an attempt to harm the unity of China's people and land, as well as an attempt to distort the great world festivity represented by the Olympic Games for which the government of China, in cooperation with the international community, has made all possible efforts to make it a success.
According to SANA, the source said, "While Syria strongly condemns these acts and the circles standing behind them, it expresses solidarity and standing by China in dealing with this situation and in maintaining security and stability in Tibet."

A letter to the editors at FoxNews.com
by Mrs. Weisburd
The article "Cyber Vigilantes Track Extremist Web Sites, Intelligence Experts Balk at Effort" by Carmen Gentile, which was posted on the FoxNews site on Saturday, March 22, 2008 contains gross mischaracterizations and sheer speculation.
Speaking as someone who has considerable knowledge of Aaron Weisburd's professional activities and motives, I wish to respond to a number of these inaccuracies.
This freelance journalist writes as if he either interviewed Weisburd, or contacted him and was refused an interview. Neither is the case. Gentile never contacted Weisburd, therefore these passages are misleading:
Wiseburd [sic] is reticent to discuss his efforts, due to safety concerns — he said he has received death threats and a handwritten note mailed to his home from a disgruntled site creator.
If Gentile knows Weisburd to have said that the letter came from a "disgruntled site creator," he should cite where he got the information. Weisburd doesn't know where the letter came from, and results of the DoJ investigation were not shared with him. Is Gentile speculating?
As for the claim that Weisburd is reticent to discuss his efforts, it is difficult to see how Gentile could come to that conclusion if he knew that Weisburd appeared on 60 Minutes and FoxNews long after receiving death threat letter.
Wiseburd [sic], the creator of the Web monitoring site Internet Haganah, which collects and stores intelligence for governments to use, said he was responsible for the dismantling of thousands of extremist sites.
In July 2007, Weisburd stated on Internet Haganah that the "site down" reports "are not a claim of responsibility. In fact, they are not even a sign that we think the removal of any given site was a good idea." (see internet-haganah.com/harchives/006186.html)
Gentile must have done some research, but he apparently missed this rather important point. If he had read it, he might also not have characterized Weisburd's efforts as being "just about shutting down sites" in words he attributes to "a private intelligence contractor."
Much of the credibility of this story rests on the comments of this anonymous contractor. Yet this anonymous source's claim that he has been monitoring the Web for jihadist activity for 15 years -- when public web browsers haven't even existed for that long -- calls his own credibility into question. A minimal amount of fact-checking pre-publication might have raised these questions.
What kind of journalism sets up a false argument and then cites an anonymous source to refute it? And is that kind of writing worthy of FoxNews?
He and Warner say their work is an important part of stopping terrorist groups from gaining a recruiting foothold in the U.S. and inspiring others to form their own spin-off extremist groups.
Gentile may have spoken to Warner, but he certainly did not speak to Weisburd, so to write the sentence as if he did is misleading. Gentile is welcome to quote Weisburd from an Internet Haganah posting:
Quote:
Shutting down websites is a tactic, and done wisely in support of a particular objective it can be a good thing. Done blindly as an end in itself it only serves to breed a resistant pest, much like the over-application of insecticide will do.

Cyber vigilante Aaron Wisesburd [sic]
Gentile misuses the word vigilante. A vigilante undertakes law enforcement without legal authority. Reporting web sites to ISPs is not undertaking law enforcement. It is not even undertaking enforcement of service providers' Terms of Service. It is merely passing on information that others may choose to act on. There is no vigilante action, no matter how often sloppy journalists misuse the word.
One more thing: it's spelled Weisburd.

Cyber vigiles Aaron Wisesburd [sic]

Fox News joins the "fake but accurate" school of journalism
by Aaron Weisburd
The story Cyber Vigilantes Track Extremist Web Sites, Intelligence Experts Balk at Effort is a fabrication, not to mention a gross misrepresentation of what we actually do. You would think, from reading the story, that the author actually spoke to me. Such is not the case. That my name is spelled three different ways should serve as some indication that there is a problem with the story. Do they have editors at Fox? Evidently not.
Then there is this lovely bit of fiction:
Quote:
"There are a lot of weekend warriors and quasi vigilantes out there that think they can do what the government can't," said a private intelligence contractor for the U.S. government who has been investigating jihadist Web sites for more than 15 years. The contractor spoke to FOXNews.com on condition of anonymity due to his continuing work with U.S. intelligence.

15 years eh? There were no jihadi websites 15 years ago. 15 years ago was 1993. The Mosaic browser had only just been released for Unix systems running X-Windows (which is in no way connected to Microsoft's Windows). In 1993 Windows '95 was still three years away. I would be surprised if there were even any radical Islamic mailing lists at that time.
The declaration of Jihad Against Jews and Crusaders was signed 23 February 1998. Speaking of jihad in the current sense of a global jihadi movement prior to that date is problematic. The Blind Sheikh and his gang did the first attack on the World Trade Center in 1993, but this was at best a pre-cursor to the global jihad, and in any event, the Blind Sheikh did not have a web site in 1993.
As for the comments of Radu, assuming he is quoted accurately, they are not worthy of response. The man clearly has no knowledge of me or the activities I engage in. Then again, neither does the story's author, Carmen Gentile. So at least Gentile and Radu are well paired.
Finally, regarding Bill Warner, I don't know him and never heard of him, but he would do well to read the following:
Well, someone certainly has been struck blind, deaf and dumb...

Contradictory Reports By Iraqi Spokesman, Sadrists On Security Forces-Mahdi Army Conflict

Official Iraqi spokesmen have said about the clashes with the Mahdi Army that Basra and Baghdad are controlled by security forces and that military operations will continue until the "last of the criminals" are eliminated.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki called on the Mahdi Army to lay down its arms and hand over wanted men.
In response, Al-Sadr demanded that Al-Maliki leave Basra, stop the firing, and permit the tribal sheikhs and clerics to reach a solution to the crisis. He also called on his men to expand the quiet protest and to distribute Korans and olive branches at police stations.
However, according to Sadrist reports, no instructions have been issued to lay down arms, and Al-Sadr has called on his men to go out today, March 27, to demonstrate to demand Al-Maliki's resignation.

Saudi English Daily On Damascus Summit A Summit In Name Only

In an editorial, the Saudi daily Arab News stated that the Arab summit scheduled to be held in Damascus next week is doomed to failure, and that a clear message is being sent by the many Arab leaders who are skipping the event and sending lower-level representation.
The paper pointed out that the Lebanese factions have failed to resolve their differences, and that some Arab states, such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt, see Syria as having done little to pressure its allies in Lebanon, in particular Hizbullah, to move toward reconciliation. It said that Syria's special relationship with Tehran was not endearing it to moderate Arab states nor to the West, and that it is being accused of taking sides in the Palestinian rift for giving refuge to the Hamas political leadership.
The Arab world today is no better than it was a year ago, when the last summit was held. But even "successful" Arab summits have failed to resolve the most immediate challenges or reach popular expectations, the editorial said.

Anchor quits Al-Jazeera, cites anti-American tone

Qatar-based news channel loses highest-profile American player, former Nightline reporter Dave Marash over 'reflexive anti-American bias' from network. Resigning anchor says attitude more prevalent among British administrators than Arab counterparts
Associated Press

Former 'Nightline' reporter Dave Marash has quit Al-Jazeera English, saying Thursday his exit was due in part to an anti-American bias at a network that is little seen in this country.

Marash said he felt that attitude more from British administrators than Arabs at the Qatar-based network.
Marash was the highest-profile American TV personality hired when the English language affiliate to Al-Jazeera was started two years ago in an attempt to compete with CNN and the BBC. He said there was a "reflexive adversarial editorial stance" against Americans at Al-Jazeera English.

"Given the global feelings about the Bush administration, it's not surprising," Marash said.

But he found it "became so stereotypical, so reflexive" that he got angry.

Marash, who's being replaced by former CNN International host Shihab Rattansi, said he was the last American-accented anchor at the network, which broadcasts from Washington, London, Kuala Lumpur and Doha, Qatar. He said there are more Canadians than Americans working at the Washington office.

Will Stebbins, Washington bureau chief for Al-Jazeera English, denied any bias against Americans.

"We certainly evaluate US policy rigorously," he said. "But we do our best to give everyone a fair shout."
Al-Jazeera English has been largely unsuccessful in getting US cable or satellite systems to pick it up, except for the municipal cable system in Burlington, Vt., and a small system visible in Toledo and Sandusky, Ohio. But its programming is available on the network's YouTube site.

Marash said there were other reasons for his exit. He said the network has quickened the pace of its broadcast instead of having the slower, more reflective tone that he had expected. But he praised the network for its coverage of issues south of the equator.

He said he plans to write a book and hopes to teach. His exit was first reported in the British publication

The Guardian; Marash's last day was March 21.
Stebbins said Marash was recently told that he would no longer be an anchor at the network. Al-Jazeera thought Marash was better utilized as a reporter, and singled out a recent series he did on American suburbia as worthy of praise.

"We were sorry to see Dave go," he said.

Saudi FM Rejects Claims Of Saudi Attempt To Isolate Syria

Saudi Foreign Minister Saud Al-Faisal has said that no Arab element was attempting to isolate Syria.
To the claim that Saudi Arabia had influenced the Arab countries to lower the level of their representation to the Damascus summit, Al-Faisal said: "These countries are independent, and this accusation shames them. We reject such insults to any Arab country."
However, a senior Saudi source reported on March 28 that Saudi Arabia had decided to lower its level of representation to the summit because of Syria's "negative and disappointing" response to the demands made by Saudi Arabia in advance of the summit.

Al-Siniora: Syrian Policy Towards Lebanon Prevented Us From Participating In Summit

Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Al-Siniora said on the eve of the Arab summit in Damascus that the main reason Lebanon was not participating in the summit was Syria's policy of thwarting matters concerning a solution to Lebanon's political crisis.
He called for basing Syria-Lebanon relations on contact between the two governments, on the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two, on setting borders, and on each country's commitment not to threaten the security of the other.

In Iraq, Sadrists Threaten To Put PM Al-Maliki On Trial

The Sadrist bloc in the Iraqi parliament has threatened to put Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki and his parliamentary bloc on trial for crimes against citizens, like Saddam Hussein was tried.
The threat came in response to the continued military activity against what Al-Maliki called "crime gangs" and his refusal to speak with them, saying that "they have no choice but to surrender."
Meanwhile, in a communiqué issued in Karabala, Shi'ite leader Muqtada Al-Sadr told his followers to adhere to the hudna (temporary ceasefire) with the government but not with the occupation forces.
Al-Sadr accused several of his men of ignoring his orders and of declaring a rebellion against the Sadrist movement, using the name of the Mahdi Army.

Syria, Lebanon Wrangle Over Damascus Summit

At a March 26 press conference, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Al-Muallem attacked Lebanon's decision to boycott the Arab summit in Damascus, hinting that foreign elements were involved in the decision.
He also accused the U.S. of pressuring over the summit, and of attempting to split the Arab world.
Al-Muallem stated that Lebanon had missed a golden opportunity to take care of its internal crisis, and for its relations with Syria. He called on the Arab countries who maintained a special relationship with Lebanon, particularly Saudi Arabia and Egypt, to show more cooperation in implementing the Arab League initiative in Lebanon.
Lebanese MP from the March 14 Forces Mustafa Alloush responded to Al-Muallem's statement by saying that the Syrian regime's "golden opportunity" to Lebanon had so far manifested itself in three decades of killing, terror, and destruction.
He added that Syria was determined to bring in the Iranian regime, like a cancer in the Arab body, instead of returning to the bosom of its Arab brothers.
Also, former Lebanese prime minister Salim Al-Hoss warned that Lebanon was on the threshold of collapse, and needed a united Arab resolution that would bring it out of the crisis. He added that no neighboring country would emerge unscathed in the event of an explosion in Lebanon's internal situation.

Bush: "Who are you? What brings you to my home? How did they let you in, boy? My guards! My soldiers! Get this boy out of here."
Child: "Nobody will take me out of here."
Bush: "Who are you to come here and threaten me?! You are on my own turf, you little child, you! Get out. My dear, bring your father, your grandfather, or your mother, so I can talk to them. Get somebody older and smarter than you. What, you came here on your own?"
Child: "You killed daddy in the Iraq war. It's true, you killed him in the Iraq war. As for my mom - you and the criminal Zionists killed her in Lebanon. You and the criminal Zionists also killed my younger and older brothers in the Gaza holocaust. I'm an orphan, you criminal!"
Bush: "What are you talking about? Where did you come from? Don't I have enough troubles already? Where did you come from?"
Child: "I have come to take revenge with this sword - revenge for my mother and my sisters. You are a criminal, Bush! You are despicable. You made me an orphan! You took everything from me, Bush! I must take revenge on you, with this sword of Islam, the Prophet's Al-Battar sword."
Bush: "No... No, my dear. I give you my word that this is it. I repent, just don't kill me. Where are my guards? Where is my people? Help! Help! He wants to kill me. Help!"
Child: "There are no guards, and your people has surrendered, Bush. I have not come alone, Bush. I have brought thousands of thousands of children from Palestine, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Afghanistan. You have denied all these children their fathers and mothers. That's why I have come to take revenge on you and on all the criminal traitors who collaborated with you."
Bush: "Okay, fine, that's enough. I will give you whatever you want from me."
Child: "What can you give me? All I want is one thing. Bring back my father and mother. I don't want anything from you. I don't want anything from you, just bring back my father and mother. I place my trust in Allah. I need to kill you."
Bush: "No, my dear. Enough. I will give you anything you want. I also... Enough with that. Come with all your friends to the White House. I will give you food and toys. We will sit in the White House and talk. You will get whatever you need."
Child: "You are impure, Bush, so you are not allowed inside the White House."
Bush: "What are you saying?! Why am I not allowed into the White House?"
Child: "Because it has been turned into a great mosque for the nation of Islam. I will kill you just like Mu'az killed Abu Lahab. I will kill you, Bush, because that is your fate."
Child stabs Bush repeatedly
Child: "Ahhh, I killed him."

Arabs battle West over free speech at UN

Muslim nations meet opposition from EU, US in proposing restrictions to be imposed on negative comments about Islam. US: 'Resolution attempts to legitimize criminalization of expression'
Associated Press

On Tuesday Arab and Muslim countries defended a resolution they pushed through at the United Nations, to have the body's expert on free speech police individuals and news media for negative comments on Islam.

The United States, Canada and some European countries criticized the role reversal for Kenyan legal expert Ambeyi Ligabo, who has reported to the global body on measures by dictatorships and repressive governments to restrict free speech. The US and other Western nations warned that the Muslim-backed resolution at the UN Human Rights Council could curtail freedom of expression and help dictatorial regimes block dissenting views. "The resolution adopted attempts to legitimize the criminalization of expression," Warren W. Tichenor, the US Ambassador to the UN in Geneva told the 47-nation body. According to Tichenor, the statement proposed by Egypt and Pakistan, which passed 32 to zero last week at the council, seeks to impose "restrictions on individuals rather than to emphasize the duty and responsibility of governments to guarantee, uphold, promote and protect human rights."

The resolution was the latest move initiated by the Arab and Muslim countries dominating the council to protect Islam from religious hatred and defamation. In defense of the resolution they cited the 2006 incident in which a Danish magazine published caricatures of Muhammad. They also referred to the Pope's recent controversial comments on the religion, and the recent release of 'Fitna', the anti-Islamic Dutch film.

From protection to limitation
Slovenia's ambassador, Andrej Logar, speaking on behalf of the European Union, warned that Ligabo's role as an independent expert was shifting from protecting free speech toward limiting it. Ligabo said in an interview last month that he was against any incitement of hatred based on religious belief. "But," he said, "We advocate the rights of individuals, not of a particular belief or ideology."

Pakistan's ambassador, Masood Khan, speaking on behalf of the 57-nation Organization of the Islamic Conference, denied the resolution would limit free speech. "It only tries to make freedom of expression responsible," he said.

Paris-based Reporters Without Borders condemned the amendment. "It turns someone who is supposed to defend freedom of opinion into a prosecutor whose job is to go after those who abuse this freedom," the organization said.

Findings Of 10th Report Of International Commission On Al-Hariri Assassination

In its 10th report, the international investigative commission on the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Al-Hariri stated that a network of individuals planned and carried out the assassination, and that this network was involved in other issues that the commission was also investigating.
It also said that the network existed prior to the assassination, and that some of its members remained active afterwards.
It was reported that the commission was still investigating the identity of the suicide bomber and the assassinations of senior Lebanese security officials Francois Al-Hajj and Wisam Id, and the connection between these murders.
Syrian Foreign Ministry Information Director Dr. Bushra Kanafani expressed dissatisfaction with the report; she called it ambiguous because it did not completely exonerate Syria.

A children’s program broadcast by Hamas’s Al-Aqsa TV featured a puppet of a Palestinian child stabbing a puppet of American President George Bush.
[tr][/tr][td][/td]  [td colspan="2"][/td]

1. The episode of the children's program called “Brilliant Children,” 1 broadcast by Hamas's satellite channel Al-Aqsa TV on April 2, featured a puppet of a Palestinian child stabbing a puppet of American President Bush. The child said he was killing Bush in revenge for the deaths of his father in Iraq , his mother in Lebanon and his brothers and sisters by the “Zionist criminals” in the “ Gaza holocaust.” 2

“…and my little sisters and my big sisters, you and the Zionist criminals killed them in the Gaza holocaust.”

“I’ll kill you Bush, because that is your fate, I’ll kill you, I’ll kill you!”
The child puppet threatens to kill the President Bush puppet in revenge for the death of his family in Iraq , Lebanon and the Gaza Strip (Al-Aqsa TV, April 2).

2. The American media (AP, the New York Daily News and MSNBC-TV) were quick to report on the program at length. In response, one of Al-Aqsa TV's commentators, who participated in its production, justified the choice of a Palestinian child to kill Bush by saying that “Bush is a murderer and the leader of the wars in the area.” In addition, he said that “Bush has turned thousands of children into orphans by delivering his weapons to Israel .” He said that the program's message was simple: “The reward is a result of the deed” [i.e.,“An eye for an eye”] (Islamonline.net, April 2).
3. Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum expressed surprise at the media storm provoked by the program and rejected the accusations that the movement's media encouraged children to kill. He said that the program merely expressed the sentiments of the children in the Gaza Strip and their reaction to the “Israeli holocaust” which President Bush had justified and supported. He said that “[The Americans] were ready to move heaven and earth when they saw the representation of a Palestinian child express his rage at American policy, which imposes an blockade [on the Gaza Strip] and permits killing…while their media did not express any criticism of the genuine and premeditated killing of more than 30 children in three days.”
4. Al-Aqsa TV customarily broadcasts children's programs with incitement to hatred for Israel and the West and encouraging terrorism. For example, on September 3, 2007, at the beginning of the school year, the same program “Brilliant Children” showed a video of a child called “Ahmed” (to symbolize all Palestinian children), whose field of expertise was described as jihad (holy war.) The “brilliant” child, as a jihad fighter , appeared in the video wearing a uniform and a mask, holding a toy rifle and carrying out military exercises. In the background comments could be heard such as “the homeland is dear to us, we will restore it with our strength, with our childhood, with our bravery and steadfastness…” 3

The child as jihad fighter (The children's TV show “Brilliant Children”,
Al-Aqsa TV, September 3, 2007).
5. Hamas's Al-Aqsa TV broadcasts its programs, rife with radical Islamic ideology and anti-Israeli, anti-Jewish and anti-American incitement, by means of two Arab communications satellites, Nilesat and Arabsat . The broadcasts are received in the Middle East, parts of Africa and south Europe . Fathi Hamad , Hamas activist and the channel's general manager, recently said that he intended to extend its reception area by broadcasting via the European satellite “ Hot Bird 4 (which also broadcasts Al-Jazeera TV) (Qudspress News Agency, February 20). So far, that has not been carried out .

Arabsat : Established in 1976 by the 21 member countries of the Arab League, today it is the ninth largest satellite company in the world. According to company reports, it has 164 million viewers who receive broadcasts from four satellites. It is in strategic partnership with most of the world's communications satellite companies. Its main offices are in Riyadh , Saudi Arabia . It also has transmitters in Dubai , Cairo and Paris .
Nilesat : An Egyptian company established in 1996. It has two satellites which broadcast mainly to the Middle East, north and central Africa and south Europe .

1 The weekly program deals with current events and is broadcast by Hamas's Al-Aqsa TV satellite channel.
2 Hamas continues to call the IDF activity in the Gaza Strip “the Gaza holocaust,” deliberately distorting the meaning of the term Holocaust , which describes the genocide of the Jews in Europe during the Second World War. For further information see our March 9, 2008 Bulletin entitled “Throughout the recent escalation, the Palestinian propaganda campaign has frequently employed the term “holocaust” to provide a false description of IDF activity in the Gaza Strip” .
4 Hot Bird : Hot Bird has three satellites which belong to Eutelsat Communications, Europe 's leading communications satellite company. Its broadcasts are received by 120 million TV viewers in Europe, north Africa and the Middle East . The company's main offices are in Paris

'Al-Ahram': Egypt Won't Let Palestinians In Again

In an editorial, the Egyptian government daily Al-Ahram wrote that Egypt was making great efforts to ease the suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza, but that it flatly refused to have the problem moved into its court.
The paper wrote that in February, Egypt permitted hundreds of thousands of Gaza residents to enter the country in order to obtain provisions, but that it would not permit this again, saying, "Egypt's security is a red line that must not be crossed, and anyone who crosses the border will have his legs broken, like Foreign Minister Ahmad Abu Al-Gheit said."
The paper's editorial came in response to statements by former senior Hamas leader Khalil Al-Hayya warning of an upcoming explosion if the siege on Gaza continues.

Aafaq Report: Iraqi Politicians, Activists Collect Signatures For Dissolution of Armed Militias, Formation of Technocrat Government

Photo: Mahdi Army Fighters in Basra

In an exclusive report, Aafaq.com said April 4 that Iraqi politicians and activists have launched an appeal “to the intellectuals and enlightened minds, and the writers and politicians, and all of the liberals of Iraq” calling on them to demand the dissolution of all armed militias, and to support the government's actions to uproot them.
In their statement, they also called for the formation of a government of technocrats, unlike the system of national and sectarian quotas that they viewed as "abhorrent."
According to the Aafaq report, the statement said: "What motivated us to send this appeal, was the fear hidden in our hearts of the repetition of the earlier events resulting in the overthrow of the national Iraqi government after the revolution of July 14, 1958, under the leadership of the martyred leader Abdel Karim Kassem....”
Aafaq said that the statement had been signed by Zuhair Kazem Abboud, an Iraqi writer and retired judge residing in Sweden; Dr. Abdul Khaliq Hussein, physician, writer and researcher; Widad Fakhir, writer and editor of the newsletter Alsimr, residing in Austria, and others.
Aafaq also provided a link to the statement for readers to sign (http://iraqiwriter.com/shiralart/Petitions/petition_177/Petition_177.htm).

Afghan Star
"In a first for post-Taliban Afghanistan, a woman has made it to the final three in the country's version of Pop Idol.
"Lima Sahar, from the conservative Pashtun belt, is up against two male contestants [...] for a place in the final sing-off on Afghan Star, which has become one of the nation's most popular television shows.
"Conservatives decry the fact that a woman has found success singing on TV, while others - younger Afghans - say the show is helping women progress. [...]
"With her hair tucked under a headscarf, Lima brushes off her critics, saying there can be no progress for women without upsetting the status quo. 'No pain, no gain,' she told reporters.
"Lima saw off 2,000 other hopefuls who auditioned for the third series of Afghan Star, in which viewers vote by text message. The format is similar to Pop Idol - the singers perform in front of a studio audience and three judges, and past winners have been given recording deals.
"Afghanistan's clerics' council has protested to the president, Hamid Karzai, over the show. 'In the situation that we have in Afghanistan right now, we don't need a woman singer. We don't need Afghan Star. We are in need of a good economy, good education,' said Ali Ahmad Jebra-ali, a member of the council. 'If Lima Sahar wins Afghan Star, how can she help the poor? This is not the way to help the Afghan people.' [...]"

HUMAN RIGHTS

An international Arab campaign against the Muslim headscarf
"A group of Arabic websites and blogs have launched an international campaign against the Muslim headscarf (hijab), arguing the move is a response to what they see as 'intellectual terrorism' practiced by strict Islamic groups and individuals.
"The campaign, called 'Take Off the Veil,' was launched March 8, 2008, to coincide with International Women's Day.
"'My hair is not a sex symbol that I should be ashamed of, and my body is not a stage for men's fantasies. I am a noble human being with my hair and body,' Dr. Elham Manea, one of the campaign's leaders, wrote on the participating websites. [...]
"Manea added that Islamists influence women by citing three reasons: that by covering her body she will protect men from sinning and will be establishing a righteous society, and that doing so is a religious obligation.
"The campaign posted a picture of a woman taking off her headscarf and part of her clothes while saying that this is the outfit she chose for herself. This picture will be distributed in the Cairo subway as a response to the headscarf leaflets showered on women commuters on daily basis.
"The campaign also posted a picture of Egyptian businessman Naguib Sawiris - who criticized the spread of Iranian-style headscarf in Egypt - and a traffic sign that says 'No Entry for the Veiled' as well as a banner that says 'Support Denmark, defend freedom.' [...]
"The 'Take off the Veil' campaign involves about 30 Tunisian, Arab, and Coptic secular websites which all posted a picture of the late Tunisian president Habib Bourguiba taking off a woman's headscarf. [...]
"Pictures of Egypt's opposition Muslim Brotherhood founder Hassan al-Banna and its current Supreme Guide Mahdi Akef were also posted with critical comments, in addition to pictures of other Islamic preachers accused of promoting fundamentalist thoughts."

CULTURE AND TRADITION

"Qat, the plague of Yemen"
"Still popular, qat chews provide an important forum for debate and dialogue in Yemen. Nearly every Yemeni chews; even old age and toothlessness fail to stop some. Taking a closer look at the agricultural, social, community, and health effects that this plant has on qat chewers will help us understand why it is so dangerous to Yemenis. [...]
"According to some research, qat can induce mild euphoria, and although this side effect is considered to be a positive as it stimulates conversation, there are many other effects that are clearly negative to qat chewers. Euphoria followed by mild depression is a common occurrence in qat users, and these sudden highs and lows can be classified as manic. Further psychological consequences include hallucinations and nightmares.
"Qat may also cause a loss of appetite, constipation, withdrawal symptoms, slight tremors, and decreased libido. Research indicates that qat can cause ulceration of the gums and gastrointestinal tract, as well as permanent tooth discoloration. Long term use can also precipitate renal and liver disease.
"Finally, many of the pesticides used to protect qat leaves from insects and bugs are not regulated; thus, excessive and improper usage has been associated with many types of cancers in qat chewers, including oral, gastrointestinal, liver, renal and bladder cancers, just to name a few. [...]
"Qat is the plague of Yemen and we need to work together on discouraging the habit of qat chewing and terminating its cultivation in order to ensure a more promising and fruitful future for the generations to come."

"The traditional Saudi Ardha is held annually and is attended by the King, members of the royal family as well as Saudi citizens, and is an expression of Saudi unity.
"The dance begins with a single line of poetry that is repeated as the drums beat in the background and swords are wielded as part of the national and official celebrations and the re-pledging of allegiance to the authorities.
"The Saudi or Najdi Ardha is considered Saudi Arabia's official dance, and expresses victory and pride of Saudi history, especially regarding the battles, wars and victories led by the founder of Saudi Arabia, King Abdulaziz.
"The Ardha used to be performed before warriors would meet their enemies in battle. It demonstrates that they have no fear of fighting and it is used to stir up enthusiasm amongst soldiers and leaders. [...]."

Sufism
"The term Sufism originates, according to writer and philosopher Sheikh Fadhlalla Haeri (The Elements of Sufism, Element Inc, 1993) from three Arabic letters, sa, wa and fa.
"The word may be derived from safa, which means purity, or from the noun safwa, which means those who are selected; some believe, writes Haeri, that the name may be derived from the word saf, referring to those who stand in a row, while others propose suffa for its origin, the suffa being 'the low verandah made of clay and slightly elevated off the ground outside the house of the Prophet Muhammad in Medina, where the poor and goodhearted people who followed him often sat.'
"Finally, there are those who assume that the word Sufi comes from suf, wool, and implies that the people who were interested in inner knowledge cared less about their outer appearance and often took to wearing a simple garment made of wool all year round. [...]"

Editorial in Pakistan Right-Wing Urdu Daily Blames U.S., Afghanistan, India for Terrorism in Pakistan

In its March 3, 2008 editorial, the Pakistani right-wing Urdu daily Roznama Ausaf accused the U.S. of backing Al-Qaeda and the Taliban, with the aim of destabilizing Pakistan. The publication of the editorial followed a similar statement by Pakistan's acting interior minister, Hamid Nawaz, who claimed that the U.S., Afghanistan, and India were behind the recent wave of suicide attacks in his country. [1]
The following are excerpts from the editorial: [2] "The U.S. and Afghanistan Are Backing the Organizations that Seek [to Perpetrate] Terrorism and Violence in Pakistan"
"[According to Acting Interior Minister Hamid Nawaz], there is a growing [suspicion] that the U.S. and Afghanistan are backing the organizations that seek [to perpetrate] terrorism and violence in Pakistan.... [The] security situation in Afghanistan is improving from day to day, while that of Pakistan is deteriorating... The Indian and Afghan intelligence apparatuses [are] likewise involved in terrorism in Pakistan.
"[In the wake of the 9/11 attacks], the U.S. created situations in Pakistan which exposed the terrible face hidden [behind its mask of] friendship. It should have praised and helped Pakistan for the role it played [in the war] on terror. Instead, [the Americans] are trying to destabilize Pakistan [in order to promote] their own interests.
"The U.S.'s past [history] indicates that, [in its dealings with other countries], it initially extends its hand in friendship. However, once its objectives are achieved, it not only leaves its [ally] country to fend for itself, but also keeps interfering in its domestic affairs, so that its independence is reduced to a sham. Afghanistan and Iraq are recent examples of [this] American aggression and lust for power."

"The Americans Lit the Candle of Democracy on Human Skulls in Iraq and Afghanistan"
"The Americans lit the candle of democracy on human skulls in Iraq and Afghanistan. Its flames also crept towards Pakistan, and the nation has been burning in these flames for several years now. The series of suicide attacks [in Pakistan] indicates the existence of a force that is trying to achieve its objectives by destabilizing [the country]...
"The Pakistani nation and government are not so oblivious of what is happening around them that they cannot confront the challenge of the enemy's conspiracy. It is as plain as day that no Pakistani group, nor the 'local Taliban,' [can possibly be] behind these terrorist operations and suicide attacks - because no Muslim could even think about taking such a step, let alone commit such horrible acts, and stain his hands with the blood of innocent Muslims who were praying to Allah in the mosques...
"Therefore, every member of our nation now realizes that Pakistan's enemies are pursuing a premeditated plan aimed at destabilizing [the country]. This is why the U.S. is so clearly interfering even in [Pakistan's internal] politics. The U.S. has been defeated by the Taliban in Afghanistan, and in order to convert its defeat into victory, it is pushing Pakistan onto the battlefield...
"The U.S. is [therefore] determined to bring to power individuals who will obey its orders and turn Pakistan into a battlefield. The statements of U.S. Secretary of State [Condoleezza Rice] indicate that the Americans are finding the recent political changes in Pakistan difficult to swallow. They still hope that the new government will promote their interests and put national security on the back burner..."

We Must Abandon the U.S.-Led War on Terror
"There have already been whispers that America [must be] involved in terrorist operations in Pakistan. However, this is the first time that a government official [namely Acting Interior Minister Hamid Nawaz] has acknowledged not only U.S. involvement, but also [the involvement] of Afghanistan's and India's intelligence agencies... A number of Indian consulates are operating along these lines in Afghanistan; they are responsible for the deteriorating situation in Baluchistan and in the North West Frontier Province. While trying to weaken Pakistan internally, India [continues] to hold fruitless talks with Pakistan on the Kashmiri issue, with the blessing of the U.S.
"In light of all this, the government should not only change its policies. It should also present the ambassadors of these countries with evidence of their interference in its internal affairs, and tell them that [this interference] will not be tolerated.
"What we need to do is to abandon the U.S.-led war on terror, whose only goal is to serve American interests, and to begin peace talks with the local [Taliban] groups. The U.S. must be told that A-Qaeda and the Taliban are based in Afghanistan, and that the war should therefore be fought over there, not in Pakistan..."

Sudanese security services April 15 stopped the printing of four newspapers, Al-Sudani, Al-Ayyam, Al-Rai Al-Sh'ab, and Agras Al-Huriya, after their editorial boards refused to give them early editions for oversight.
The papers saw the security services' request as a move to tighten oversight, since to date the censors themselves would come to the paper.

8-year-old girl's divorce is finalized while a law to prevent early marriage stalls

By: Hamed Thabet

Nojoud reciving gifts in Yemen Times office in Sana’a.
Eight-year-old Nojoud is now safe after an anonymous donor paid her 30-year-old husband to divorce her. Although this chapter of her life has closed, there are many other Yemeni girls who still suffer from early marriage and its consequences. Feminist groups in Yemen are urging the Parliament to legally define a minimum marriage age. However, there is a long way to go before girls like Nojoud can be free from detrimental early marriages.

SANA’A, 16 April — A few months ago, Nojoud was an average 8-year-old girl from a poor family. Then Nojoud’s father decided to marry her off to a man more than three times her age. Overnight, Nojoud became a wife, enduring physical and sexual abuse for two months until she ran away with the help of her uncle and filed a court case against her father and her husband.

On April 15, with support from her lawyer Shatha Mohammed Nasser and Judge Abud Al-Khaleaq Ghowber, Nojoud paid her way out of marriage with YR 100,000 from an anonymous donor in the Emirates and happily became an 8-year-old divorcee.

“This was the first time a girl came to us for a divorce. We are going to do our best to push the parliament to change the marriage law,” said Judge Ghowber.

“I am so happy to be free and I will go back to school and will never think of getting married again," Nojoud said joyfully. "It is a good feeling to be rid of my husband and his bad treatment.”

She said that she felt lucky that she did not have to continue in such a marriage and a live out a life similar to her sisters, who had been married young [though not as young as Nojoud]
and have alr
Nojoud with her lawyer in the court.
eady bore children.

“Although Nojoud does not know her real birthday, I believe this day she was born again and it would be apt to celebrate this day as the first day of her new life,” said Nasser.

Early marriage in Yemen:

According to the International Center for Research on Women’s 2007 statistics, Yemen is one of 20 developing countries where early marriage is common. Nearly half of all Yemeni girls are married before the age of 18.

Most women have their first child immediately after their first menstruation cycle and are likely to have a child every 12 months during their reproductive lifespan. Yemen's fertility rate is extremely high, with an average 6.3 children per each woman, and the country also has some of the highest mother and infant mortality rates worldwide.

According to research on early marriage in Yemen from Oxfam and the United Nations Population Fund, there are severe physical consequences that result from early marriage and subsequent early childbirth such as nutritional anemia, post-partum hemorrhages, obstetric fistula (a disorder that affects the bladder and causes leaking of urine or feces), plus mother and infant mortality.

Additionally, many girls like Nojoud develop irreparable psychological complexes from early marriage and the forced sexual encounters that accompany it. Early marriage also contributes to divorce and family problems.<

br>
“I hated nights because they usually meant that my husband would come to my bed. I used to run from him and he would chase me and beat me and do his thing. I pray that my younger sisters do not face the same fate,” said Nojoud. Now the 8-year-old is living with her uncle and his family in relative safety.

A divided society

The Yemeni personal status law stipulates that a girl cannot be wed until she is ready for intercourse, which in essence leaves the judgment up to the girl's parents or guardians.

Judge Ghowber explained that early marriages are usually the fault of the parents. He insisted that there must be increased awareness among Yemeni families in order to avoid these serious mistakes.

A number of Yemeni religious scholars, including some in the Evaluation and Jurisprudence Committee in the Parliament, say that since there is no religious statement defining a minimum age for marriage, then early marriage is perfectly fine if not desirable.

Other scholars and religious authorities, like Judge Hamoud Al-Hitar, the Minister of Endowment, want to create legislation to prevent parents from marrying their girls off at a young age and to prevent religious sheikhs from endorsing such marriages.

“Those who approve of girls marrying at 13, 14 or even below 18, are barbaric men who abuse childhood and are irresponsible,” said religious scholar Yahiya Al-Najar, the former Minister of Endowment.

He explained that there should be a minimum age for boys and girls to marry in order to complete their phys

ical and mental development and so that they can manage the responsibilities of marriage and raising a family.

Al-Hitar said that the minimum age of marriage should be 16-years-old, no less. He added that previous religious bodies in charge of jurisprudence wrote such laws in 1976 and in 1988.

"Those who say that defining a minimum age for marriage is un-Islamic do not understand the religion at all," said Al-Hitar. "Defining a minimum age of marriage is a need dedicated by life’s nature.”

The Yemeni parliament is equally divided between MPs who believe in safe motherhood (and thereby banning early marriage) and those who don’t. Deputy speaker of Parliament, MP Himyar Al-Ahmar, said that he supports the creation of legislation against early marriage, requested by the Women's National Committee, but prefers to forward the issue to the Evaluation and Jurisprudence Committee, which is strongly against such legislation.

Rasheeda Al-Hamadani, chair of the Women's National Committee, promised to continue to raise awareness about the issue by holding workshops soon with religious leaders, MPs and decision makers.
